Statement of purpose

The Bungalow, located in Great Barr, Birmingham, offers services for children aged 8 to 17 years (over 18 years in exceptional circumstances) who have learning disabilities and associated behaviours. The home has developed a comprehensive multidisciplinary team with many years of experience working with children with learning disabilities and mental health needs. We offer a range of containing, intensive, flexible, and skilled interventions, filling gaps in community and inpatient services. Our approach is child-centered, with individualised care plans based on multidisciplinary risk assessments, placement planning, and behaviour support. We also provide indirect support to education providers to manage daily behaviours, ensuring that the child remains at the heart of the care plan.

Our vision for The Bungalow is to provide the highest possible quality of care in a homely, relaxed, and nurturing environment. We aim to help children develop practical, social, and daily living skills needed to thrive and grow into adults, fulfilling their individual aspirations. The home fosters a safe, caring environment that reflects a family home, where children receive carefully planned care to maximise placement stability.

Therapeutic Environment: The Bungalow is designed to provide a therapeutic environment that promotes healing and personal growth. Our staff is trained in trauma-informed care practices, ensuring that each child receives the emotional and psychological support they need to recover from past experiences and build resilience.

Focus on Independence: One of the key goals at The Bungalow is to prepare children for independent living. We emphasise skill-building activities that encourage self-reliance and confidence, helping each child to develop the abilities necessary for a successful transition to adulthood.

Family Involvement: We actively involve families in the care process, recognising the importance of family connections in a child’s development. Regular family meetings, updates, and involvement in care planning are integral to our approach, ensuring that the child’s support network is strong and cohesive.
